As a trusted leader specialising in help for people with disabilities in Geelong, Fair Go Access provides tube feeding resources and support services. Bolus feeding is one method of tube feeding that can benefit those with difficulties eating and swallowing on their own. Check out our step-by-step guide to bolus feedings so you can better understand how this nutritional support works.
Bolus Feeding Basics
Bolus feeding uses a syringe to send formula through a feeding tube. This involves a catheter syringe with a hole with a plunger inside rather than a needle. The formula is drawn up through the syringe hole before it’s pushed into the tube via the plunger. A bolus equals one formula meal.
Bolus Feeding Prep
Personal hygiene and equipment sanitation are key to successful bolus feeding and patient health. Always wash hands before tube feeding and make sure the area and all required supplies are clean. To finish prepping, open the plug at the end of the tube and pinch it to prevent leakage.

Next, you’ll need to fill the syringe with the recommended amount of water and place it into the end of the tube or a button adapter. Unclamp and flush the tube before wiping it clean and pouring the prescribed formula amount into an empty container. Add the formula to the syringe and firmly place the catheter tip into the tube. Unclamp the tube as you slowly push down the plunger.
Refill the syringe and repeat each step to ensure the correct amount of formula is injected into the tube. It should take around 15 minutes, if not longer, to fully fill the tube. You can also remove the plunger, so the formula slowly drips in. Lastly, fill the syringe with the recommended water and don’t forget to switch the syringe every one to two days to minimise the risk of infection.
